Headshot of Rick Follett with text that reads 3 payment partner questions

We recently had a conversation with Rick Follett, Vice President of Partnerships at TrustCommerce to discuss the latest developments in the world of healthcare software and embedded payments. In this Q&A, he touches on his vast experience in healthcare, shares his approach to working with partners, offers tips for what to look for in a payment vendor, and the importance of the end user experience.

Q: When it comes to healthcare software, each solution is unique. What advice do you have for healthcare SaaS vendors when it comes to embedded payments?

A: In the early stages of a company, there can be a rush to get something implemented quickly.  With so many priorities, it can be difficult to research every option from a strategic partner point of view. As a company begins to grow and scale, it is important to review your current partners and integrations and evaluate where you can benefit from additional capabilities and expertise offered by others in the market. For example, you may find a partner that offers specialized solutions aligned with your industry.  If you are a healthcare SaaS vendor offering a software solution for the healthcare market, there are advantages to working with a payments partner with a healthcare focus. For over 20 years, TrustCommerce has worked with healthcare organizations large and small. We eat, breathe, and speak healthcare, which separates us from many of the payment providers in the market. We’ve teamed up with some of the most recognized software providers in healthcare— Epic, athenahealth, Veradigm, R1, and Flywire to name a few!

Q: What are some criteria that make a healthcare-focused payments partner a better fit?

A: There are the obvious reasons like HITRUST certification, HIPAA compliance and all the other necessary regulatory guidelines that must be followed, but I think finding a company that aligns with your values and company mission is the most important. With so much noise in the payments industry, it is important to partner with a payment vendor that drives in your lane alongside you, without other competing priorities when it comes to the focus of payments.  Of course, there are other things as well, such as finding a payments partner that has high service response rates as well as being easy to implement.

From a tech perspective, think about what matters most to your customers. Some of TrustCommerce’s key features include:

  • Support for validated P2PEto protect payment information
  • Gateway and merchant services, a single source for healthcare payments needs
  • Integration with popular EHR solutions like Epic and Veradigm

And, what matters most to your organization:

  • Scalability
  • Ability to decrease your technical overhead
  • Reducing PCI footprint

Q: How do you prioritize the end user experience?

A: We greatly value the relationships we have with our ISV partners. And we’re passionate about delivering an outstanding experience to users. The user experience has to come first, which is why it’s our top priority.

How do we do this? By following three pillars:

  • Ensure seamlessness and brand continuity
  • Let users pay the way they want – online, in-person, digital wallet including Google Pay, Apple Pay and now PayPal
  • Enable a frictionless onboarding experience
